It's pretty much a simple continuous run with a front scenic area showing a double track; one serving a small branchline through station, with a siding for parcel's/goods loading and unloading, or for serving a terminating train. The other line serves for through express and freight services. The fiddle yard at the back can accomodate a small number of locos etc, off scene. The layout could represent any era, though the lack of a run-around facility on the goods siding could limit the layout more towards the diesel era.
